Bright Lights Student Success Story

Erika’s Story

Hello, I am Erika Rose Caparas. I am a former student of Bright Lights Learning
Center and part of the active Alumni.

Since childhood I lived with my aunty, my brother and grandparents. I was always worried about how I could afford to pay for my schooling. . When I was 16 years old , I had only completed one year of High School and was no longer attending school. I had become a sales assistant, selling in the bazaar to help support my family so that my sibling could also attend school.

I was invited to become a student at Bright Lights Learning Center. I was referred there to participate in the Alternative Learning System, very eager to study, as I had not been to school for three years. I was greeted by Teacher Flonette, who told me I could commence as a High School Student in June, free of charge, as part of a sponsorship program.

Thanks to Bright Lights and my sponsors I was able to complete my High School course and pass the exam that same year. I completed the Bridging Course in preparation to attend College, since I had not studied formally like other students. I also had some other subjects to catch up on. The “English Only” class with pastor Rick had a big impact on my studies. I remember he said, “Life is not just to survive, but thrive and strive for success.”

In 2012 I started a Bachelor of Secondary Education, with a Major in English! I was able to complete my student teaching placement in the public school system and at Bright Lights, three times per week, graduating in 2015.

The “English Only” class with pastor Rick had a big impact on my studies.

Teachers and my sponsors encouraged me to hold on to my dreams. Even now that I am working they are with me all the way, especially Ate Maree Smiler. She is my biggest blessing. Without her I might still be a sales lady with no degree.
Because of poverty, not every child in every family has the opportunity to study. It is not their choice to be helpless. I remember a promise in Jeremiah 29:12, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

Right now I am working as a Food Safety Team Leader in one of the leading biscuit manufacturing companies in the Philippines. I train all employees regarding food safety compliance, ensuring the entire food safety system for the company. I have a lovely family with two lovely babies, Adie and Ali.

I will always be thankful to all the people who have made my journey possible through their help and loving heart. I do hope that there will be more students who will finish their studies and strive also for their success. This will be made possible because of sponsors and future sponsors.

“When the time is right, I the Lord will make it happen.” (Isaiah 60:22)
